March 24 – Austin’s City Council approved a ban-the-box ordinance

March 24, 2016 – Austin’s City Council approved a “ban-the-box” ordinance which prohibits employers from inquiring about an applicant’s criminal past until a conditional offer of employment has been made. Also referred to as a “fair chance” ordinance, the new law is meant to give applicants with criminal backgrounds a greater chance at being hired. The ordinance does not apply to employers with fewer than 15 employees and has other requirements and restrictions.

The effective date of the ordinance is April 4, 2016.
