July 20, 2016, Gov. Raimondo signed a law limiting when employers may make deductions from or withhold employees’ wages. Under the new law, employers may only make deductions from or withhold employees’ wages if:
- permitted by federal or state law or
- only after getting written or electronic approval from the employee
The new law went into effect on signing.

June 6 – Governor Raimondo signed a law making it illegal for employers to discipline or penalize employees for receiving and complying with a subpoena
On June 6, 2016, Governor Raimondo signed a law making it illegal for employers to discipline or penalizing employees for receiving and complying with a subpoena, when the employee give prompt notice to the employer that they have received the subpoena. Under the new law, employers are not required to pay employees for missed time when complying with a subpoena.
The law went into effect immediately.
