November 2 – Citizens of the City of Elizabeth passed a paid sick leave ballot initiative covering private employers

On November 2, 2015, City of Elizabeth voters approved a ballot initiative requiring private employers to provide paid sick leave to employees who work in the city. Although the ordinance has yet to be published, basic requirements of the sick leave law include providing employees with at least 1 hour of paid sick leave for every hour worked. Employers with 10 or more employees will be able to cap sick leave accrual at 40 hours per year. Employers with fewer than 10 employees will be able to cap accrual at 24 hours per year. Special rules will apply to food service, child care, and home health care employers.

The date the new ordinance will be come effective is still unknown.

September 30 – The Department of Labor and Workforce Development announces that there will be no change to the state minimum wage in 2016

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development has announced that there will be no increase to the state minimum wage in 2016. The state minimum wage law requires the Department of Labor and Workforce Development to increase the minimum wage each year when there is an increase in the consumer price index for all urban wage earners and clerical workers. The Department determined there was no increase in the relevant consumer price index and therefore there will be no increase in the state’s minimum wage for 2016.
