February 2018 – Kansas City’s city council passed a fair chance (ban the box) ordinance
On February 1, 2018, Kansas City’s city council passed Ordinance 180034. The ordinance prohibits employers from 1) inquiring about an applicant’s criminal history until after the employer has determined the applicant is otherwise qualified for a job and 2) refusing to hire an applicant because of their criminal history unless the criminal history, considering the frequency, recentness, and severity of crimes, is reasonably related to the responsibilities of the position.
The new law becomes effective on June 9, 2018.
