August 1 – The minimum wage increases

On August 1, 2016, Minnesota’s minimum wage increased to $9.50 for employers with at least $500,000 in annual gross sales or business and $7.75 for employers with less than $500,000 in annual gross sales or business.

May 27 – The Minneapolis city council passed an ordinance requiring employers to provide sick and sick time to employees

On May 27, 2016, the Minneapolis city council passed an ordinance requiring employers to provide sick and safe time to employee beginning July 1, 2017. Employers with six or more employees must provide paid leave; employers with fewer than six employees must provide unpaid leave.

The ordinance requires employers to provide employees with at least 1 hour of sick/safety time to employees for every 30 hours worked. Employers may cap the amount of leave accrued by employees with one year at 48 hours.

Sick/Safety leave may be taken for:

  • the employee’s physical or mental illness, injury, or health condition, including the need for medical diagnosis, care, treatment, or preventative care;
  • a covered family member’s physical or mental illness, injury, or health condition, including the need for medical diagnosis, care, treatment, or preventative care;
  • the employee’s treatment, counseling, relocation, or legal proceedings associated with instances of domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking;
  • a covered family member’s treatment, counseling, relocation, or legal proceedings associated with instances of domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking;
  • care for a covered family member whose school or place of care has been closed due to inclement weather, loss of power or utilities, or other unexpected closure; or
  • the closure of the employee’s place of business or the need to care for a covered family member whose school or place of care has been closed due to a public health emergency.

Other rules and restrictions apply.

The ordinance takes effect on July 1, 2017.
