October 16 – The DC Council took emergency action to postpone increases to the tipped minimum wage

On October 16, 2018, the DC Council took emergency action to postpose increases to the district’s tipped minimum wage – see B22-0992 and PR22-1034. The tipped minimum wage technically increased to $4.50 on July 1, 2018, as the result of a voter intitiate that passed on June 19, 2018 (see below). The DC Councel took the emergency action to postpone the tipped minimum wage increase while a permanent repeal of the increase it passed on October 16, 2018, is approved by the mayor and Congress – see B22-0913 and B22-0920.

June 19 – Voters passed an initative to raise and ultimately eliminate the tip minimum wage rate by 2025

On June 19, 2018, DC voters passed Initative 77. The initiative increases the minimum wage for tipped employees over the next several years as follows:

  • July 1, 2018 – $4.50
  • July 1, 2019 – $6.00
  • July 1, 2020 – $7.50
  • July 1, 2021 – $9.00
  • July 1, 2022 – $10.50
  • July 1, 2023 – $12.00
  • July 1, 2024 – $13.50
  • July 1, 2025 – $15.00
  • July 1, 2026 – Employers must pay tipped employees the same minimum wage paid to non-tipped employees
