August 7 – Governor Markell signs a social media privacy law

On August 7, 2015, Governor Markell signed a privacy law protecting employee social media accounts. The law prohibits employers from requiring employees or applicants from disclosing any information, including passwords, that would enable the employer to access the employees’ social media accounts. It also prohibits employers from requiring or requesting employees to access their accounts so that the employer may gain access.

The law went into effect on August 7, 2015.
