July 1 – Gov. Nixon signed a law granting employees protection from retaliation for participating in certain criminal proceedings as a witness, victim, or immediate family member of a victim.

On July 1, 2016, Gov. Nixon signed a law prohibiting employers from retaliating against employees for participating in certain criminal proceedings as a witness, victim, or immediate family member of a victim. Specifically, the new law prohibits employers from discharging or disciplining “any witness, victim, or member of a victim’s immediate family for honoring a subpoena to testify in a criminal proceeding, attending a criminal proceeding, or for participating in the preparation of a criminal proceeding, or require any witness, victim, or member of a victim’s immediate family to use vacation time, personal time, or sick leave for honoring a subpoena to testify in a criminal proceeding, attending a criminal proceeding, or for participating in the preparation of a criminal proceeding.”

The law goes into effect immediately.
