July 1 – Maryland minimum wage increases.

On July 1, 2016, the minimum wage increases for all employees in Maryland, except those working in Montegomery and Price George’s Counties. The new minimum wage is $8.75. For employees in Montgomery and Price George’s Counties the minimum wage remain $9.55 until October 1, 2016, at which time it will increase to $10.75. As always, some restrictions and exceptions apply.

May 19 – Governor Hogan signed a bill extending Maryland’s equal pay protections to wage discrimination based on gender identity

On May 19, 2016, Governor Hogan signed a law that extends the state’s equal pay protection to discrimination based on gender identity. Under the new law, employers cannot pay employees less because of their gender identity.

The law goes into effect on October 1, 2016.

May 19 – Governor Hogan signed a law phasing out subminimum wages for employees with disabilities at work activities centers or other sheltered workshops

On May 19, 2016, Governor Hogan signed a law that will phase out the Commissioner of Labor and Industry’s authority to authorize work activities centers and other sheltered workshops to pay subminimum wages to employees with disabilities.

The law goes into effect on October 1, 2016.
